People with Type 2 diabetes have way too much glucose in their blood! If you have type 2 diabetes, physical activity is the most important aspect of your treatment plan. Chronic exercise allows the individual the ability to control blood sugars, and keep them in the normal range. How Exercise helps Diabetes type 2? Well in layman terms, muscle fibers behave like micro sponges, and when properly engaged absorb glucose efficiently. The glucose lowering effect is profound!
Individuals with type two diabetes are generally obese. According to the American Diabetes Association 33% of all type 2 diabetics are clinically obese. That equates to 44 million Americans! A classic feature is obesity around the mid section which creates insulin resistance. There are approximately 75 million Americans who are insulin resistant. We know that fat cells contain hormones which keep insulin from working at peak potential. The larger the fat cells the more insulin resistant you become. If you are currently obese its time to take action to prevent Diabetes other debilitating diseases from manifesting themselves from the diabetes. These other diseases are hypertension, stroke, hypercholesterolemia and heart disease.
Take Action! This is how exercise helps diabetes type 2
The Diabetes Prevention Trial showed that losing excess weight and increasing physical activity lowered the risks of type 2 diabetes by 50%. It’s important that calories are burnt through daily exercise. Burning extra calories can be as simple as going on a 30 minute walk. Even better if your doctor clears you for more vigorous exercise , then both weight loss and fat reduction though resistance training at the gym could be a very beneficial and an efficient way to regulate elevated blood sugars. It has also been shown that exercise in itself without weight loss will control blood sugars. However it is very rare that someone who engages in a properly prescribed fitness program doesn’t lose weight. With properly engaged muscles, excess glucose is rapidly absorbed and a healthy metabolism is created. A heightened metabolism will generally elicit weight loss. When the “Pre-diabetic” or “Type 2 diabetic” begins an exercise program, it is highly suggested that you are carefully monitored by a qualified personal trainer who is also a certified medical exercise specialist. During your training session with a qualified personal trainer and medical exercise specialist, proper sets and variables need to be applied to keep you injury free, and blood sugars from dipping too low. if your blood sugars dip too low you will suffer a hypotension crisis. The Certified medical exercise specialist will monitor your blood sugars with a glucometer or through your insulin pump. The Medical Exercise Specialist may have you eat 15 grams of fast acting carbohydrate during your workout to stabilize blood sugars. Your blood pressures will also be monitored and you will be asked to change shoes half way through your workout. Often diabetics are at high risk for foot ulceration from restrictive footwear. Changing foot wear prevents diabetic ulcers of the feet.
Amazing results are how exercise helps diabetes type 2. Exercise is so efficient and beneficial that hypoglycemia and hypotensive reactions can occur. This can be dangerous in some cases and lead to Insulin shock. The good news is that with each and every carefully monitored workout session, your blood sugars will safely adjust and adapt to the rigors of exercise. Your body yearns for balance and adapts rather nicely!
It is also very important that you have a balanced approach to your eating behaviors when exercising. The emphasis should be on portion control, avoid too much snacking, limit your visits to restaurants and fast food chains and avoid sugary empty calorie drinks and replace them with water. Meeting with a qualified registered dietitian is always a great starting point. They will give you proper recommendations on pre and post workout meals, and proper eating habits to help induce weight loss and control your blood sugars.
